About James
James Rhodes’ practice focuses exclusively on tax dispute resolutions. While a portion of his practice involves representing taxpayers in the Tax Court of Canada or Federal Court of Appeal, the true value in his work occurs at the audit and appeal stage in negotiating with the Canada Revenue Agency. In James’ experience, taxpayers, or their representatives, often focus narrowly on the scope of a tax audit only to miss the bigger picture and hurt their case before it even reaches the Tax Court. His goal is to maximize his clients’ chance of success even before the case commences. He represents clients
James has extensive experience advising and representing clients in tax disputes relating to charges of tax evasion, voluntary disclosure program applications, taxpayer relief requests, rectification applications, and providing tax opinions on accounting positions to help ensure a taxpayer’s filing position remains statute barred. He practices across all areas of tax including ITA, HST/GST, PST, EHT, SRED, Director’s Liability Assessments, Net Worth Assessments, Rectification Applications, Employee vs Independent Contractor determinations for EI, CPP, HST, EHT, and WSIB determinations.
As a former clerk of the Tax Court of Canada, and subsequently a lawyer with Department of Justice representing the government against taxpayers, James brings a full resolution perspective to matters he is involved in.
